The Plump Hill Barn Dance and Ceilidh Band

Plump Hill Barn Dance Band Gloucestershire

Barn Dance Bishopswood

What is the difference between a barn dance and a ceilidh?

These days, both terms are used for the same
activity and are used interchangeably. Traditionally, a ceilidh might also include music and song, poetry and storytelling.

What happens at a barn dance?

The band plays traditional dance tunes and and everyone dances folk dances under the direction of a caller.
Some of them are very like the dances you may have seen in a Jane Austen
film but more lively and informal.

Dancing The Swan

What does the caller do?

He explains the dances and the formations by walking them through and
then calls the moves throughout the dance so that everyone knows
what to do.

That all sounds a bit formal but it certainly isn't at our barn dances.
Our aim is to make sure that everyone has a really enjoyable time.
Whatever age you are and whether you are a complete beginner or an
experienced dancer you will be able to join in and enjoy yourself.

Andy, our caller, will run the evening for you and make sure everyone is
included. You'll soon find that everyone quickly relaxes and joins in.
The fun we have is infectious. We are a band with a long and varied
experience and have provided dancing and entertainment for local get-togethers, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events and
Burns Night Suppers. We have played in barns, marquees, village halls,
town halls, community centres, hotels, on village greens, in stately
homes: you name it, we've played there. We can help you put on a
dance in which everyone can be included from very young children to
great grandparents.

Sometimes people enjoy songs every now and
again, as a break from the dancing and we can include that in any evening if you wish. We have a wide and varied repertoire
including traditional folk, music hall, contemporary folk, and songs we
have written ouselves. We can also include background music and even poetry (especially for Burns Night celebrations) and storytelling if required. We will always talk to you before any event and
make sure we provide exactly what you want.
